Meet the Scout
Saturday, April 19th, 2008This is definitely the best “Meet the…” so far.
This is definitely the best “Meet the…” so far.
Yeah, so I missed the fact that DirectX 10 only works with Vista…oh well, I can still play Portal!
Back in, oh, December, my friend Will was visiting from Canada. Before he came he had offered to buy me Unreal Tournament 3 (he really likes to spend his parent’s money on his friends), I however feel guilty accepting these presents so I said no. Then, a few days before he left he called to tell me that he had something for me, but I couldn’t go get it because I was busy that week. So, he gave it to his friend, that goes to my school, to give to me and told me that it was a mousepad. My thought was, “huh, why a mousepad,” the only thing I could think of was that it might be Half-Life themed. I talked to the guy he had given it to, who apparently knew nothing about it. A few days later he came to me and said that he did in fact have it, but not with him. He then forgot to bring it for a while. That is, until today. Guess what…I was right. It’s a fucking huge-ass Half-Life 2 themed mousepad or “Fragmat” as it is titled. This thing is bigger than my screen, which I suppose is good for gaming because it means you have more surface for looking around. In short, it’s fucking sweet, thanks Will.
My Companion Cube will never leave me…right? Yesterday I found this [can't find it] picture which inspired me. Anyway, I was up late into the night making my on Companion Cube model (cg not physical). Unfortunately, today when I was almost finished with it, I realized that a while back I had made a huge mistake. Thankfully, I save incrementally so if I fuck up (like I did) I can go back to and fix it. It actually turned out to be a good thing because the model worked better the second time. Here’s the final product:
Today I went to my dad’s office to play/complete Half-Life 2: Episode 2. It was awesome and it was shiny! That’s all I really feel like saying. Great review eh?
Especially when it doesn’t get done.

My mom thought it would be fun to go to the Grand Canyon over winter break, she was wrong. I’d really like to write a long post about the many occurances, but I’m too fucking lazy. Here’s a summary:
I got sick week before.
Dad got sick over weekend.
Mom sick by the time we reached phoenix.
Spent some time with my aunt, cousins, uncle.
Got to the GC.
Lots of tourists.
Fucking cold.
Saw the bid hole. A lot.
Last day there it snowed in flurries.
Back to Phoenix.
More time with aunt, cousins, uncle.
Came home.
Weee.
Today I got to finish Portal. It was so fucking awesome. The stuff GLaDos says is so funny, as was “Still Alive”. If you haven’t played and plan to do so, don’t watch the following video.
The other day I decided that I was going to defrag my hard drive. Unfortunately I didn’t have enough space on my hard drive, so I had to delete a bunch of crap (including a large restore file that I probably shouldn’t have tampered with). After defragging, which was completely pointless as far as I can tell because loading shit hasn’t gotten any faster, I discovered that the Google Desktop gadget that I use to put my lappy into hibernation was broken. I tried removing it and re-adding it to no avail, I uninstalled it and tried reinstalling it, but nothing happened. The GUI showed up, but the buttons did nothing. Now, this wouldn’t be a problem on most computers, but mine is special and by special I mean a piece of shit (sort of). It has never liked to go into hibernation, the button in the shutdown dialog does nothing, setting the power button setting to hibernation does nothing, in fact until I found this gadget, the only way it went into hibernation was sometimes if I closed the lid when it was running on battery, this is not always helpful. Why do I need my computer to hibernate so badly, you ask? Well how would you like to have to wait 15 minutes every time you want to do some computing? I’m not sure if it’s that I have a lot of crap installed (which I do) or whether it’s actually important shit loading, but startup takes forever. So without hibernation, my laptop isn’t very fun.
You may have seen in a previous post (who am I kidding, no one’s reading this) that I got the Orange Box, but could not play it because my computers suck. Well, today my father and I went up to his office to test it out on his computer, it’s significantly newer that both our compies and we thought why not. He suggested that if it worked we could bring it home for break, of course he forgot that it was locked to his desk…I checked his hardware info and was encouraged by the fact that his graphics card appeared to be a card and not integrated (integrated is such bullshit). So, I installed Steam, installed Portal, updated Porta, ran the game, started a new game, it loaded (it looked a little rough, but beautiful and shiny), the first portal opened, hoped, walked through it, and…IT WORKED!!! I had to go back through it a couple times to make sure. It worked quite nicely in fact shiny, reflective, a bit aliased, and a little jerky, but definitely playable, I think that bloom may have even been supported. I got to play for about half an hour and enjoyed myself thoroughly. I really need to get myself that new computer.
