Use the arrow keys to rotate, use a, w, s, d to move that thing in the center and the other thing follows that other thing which is positioned at the the cursor position relative to the origin (that other thing in the center that doesn’t move…much).
Update: Now with super cool gatling gun (space to fire)…and color!

I finally got my 3D Flash Engine to work. The other day the solution just popped into my head. I would explain it, but it would likely make no sense; either because you wouldn’t understand the math or (more likely) I do a bad job explaining. Right now it’s pretty much a 2D game in 3D space (by which I mean there are only 2 dimensions of motion) use the arrow keys to rotate the view and A,W,S,D to drive the wheel (which does not rotate (yet)). Please note that it requires Flash Player 9.Found here.

creen of Death. Not sure what I did, but the Microsoft site said it was a driver error; no hint as to which one. I’ve only gotten the screen maybe once on my laptop, so I must have done sommet pretty bad. Though, all I was doing was using Flash 8…oh well. Not too long before this, svchost stopped working so a bunch of stuff wasn’t working, one of which was the battery monitor, which tells me when my battery is low, so I was just minding my own business, when all of a sudden my computer turns off, not shuts down, but turns off; just went dead.

I wanted to port my HoverBalls to actionscript 3. I had tried doing this with another movie before, but I had discovered that it did not support the way in which I added new objects at runtime. So I converted all of the objects I had made into pure actionscript. Then, I installed the Flash 9 beta and opened up the file. I ran it and it spewed out this long ‘warning’ telling me that AS3 does not support anything. So that didn’t work, but here’s the actionscript version anyway. Now ctrl, click, drag and release creates 10 balls of the displayed size.

So I added some more stuff to my hover balls. More accurate shadows and the option of seeing the vectors that I used to render the shadows. Multiple lights sources. Better shading (still crappy though). If you hold Ctrl and click it creates a bunch of little balls which are fun to repel with the mouse. I doubt I’ll be able to do soft shadows.

This is a simulation of hovering balls. It took me some of last night and most of today, getting the shadows to be drawn in the correct position behind each ball took me a while to get right; I ended up with a bunch of complicated math. Press and hold shift, click your left mouse button and drag (yes all at the same time) to set the size of the ball you want to create, then (still holding shift) release your left mouse button. You should get a ball of some size. If not, then you fail. You can move the light source by dragging it. And clicking while not pressing shift causes balls to be repelled my your cursor. Oh, and clicking on a ball deactivates it; clicking again activates it again.
And you know those math problems that you never think you’ll ever use? You know the complicated ones or for some people all of them? Well, guess what I had to use to get the shadows to work right…

I don’t like my computer. It decides that it no longer wishes to open any new programs at arbitrary times. When I’m working in flash and I try to test my movie, the processing dialog comes up and then disappears…nothing happens. Then, sometimes it decide to work again (much later) and sometimes it just sits there giving me the finger.

Well, my nose isn’t as runny and my throat isn’t as sore, but my eyes and my head still hurt. In other news, I added dragging to my program of unknown purpose:
See it here.
Pressing Enter now returns to the center of the cluster. Unfortunately if you drag your mouse out of the window, the dragging stops and doesn’t work again until you release your mouse button and start dragging again. now I’m going to go eat lunch…I hope.

I was going to set up my old 98 computer as a dedicated server for my flash game. I installed apache and the Java runtime. Then, the other night when I went to install a NIC (network interface controller; that socket in the back of your computer you plug an ethernet cable into; the thing that makes your internet go…never mind), and discovered that the NICs I had were for an older motherboard slot.

My 98 has the white PCI slots, the NIC goe into the black PCIe 16x slot. So that pretty much failed.
A week ago my friend said that I could have his old video card if my boss still had it. I asked, but he had throne it out. So, instead he gave me another one. This one was AGP and I wasn’t sure if my dad’s computer had AGP. After the failed NIC, I tried to install the video card in my dad’s computer. As I had suspected, there was a very obvious lack of an AGP slot. Fuck.

In chemistry, we’re doing chemical reaction research projects. This may sound like the average dull chem project, but it’s not. What makes it different is that we’re actually demonstrating the reaction. Insome cases this means dealing with potentially dangerous chemicals and compounds, as is the case with the reaction that Alex and I chose: Flash Powder. Alex has a friend who knows about this stuff and was gonna help us make the stuff. The idea was that Alex was going to get the supplies from his friend and then come over to my house so we could make it. Unfortunately my mom is a complete worrywart/control freak and she wasn’t going to be around. She was afraid that we were going to blow something off and that no one would be around to take us to the emergency room. So, she decides to ask the friendly neighborhood chemistry proffessor, who of course doesn’t trust us to not blow ouselves up either. They decided that before we made the stuff that we had to go talk to him about it to make sure we knew what we were doing. Then, after my mom has left, I get a call from the chemists wife and she tells me that something came up and they have to go to San Jose and can I come over at 6. Well that sort of fucked us over right there because Alex was going to come over in the afternoon and probably wouldn’t be able to come over that late. So, I call him up to tell him the bad news. It turns out that he couldn’t get the stuff today anyways, so we’re going to have to do it tomorrow and you just read all of that just to learn none of it matter. Sucks huh?
